WHAT TO EXPECT:

This private 12-hour tour with a professional, English-speaking driver gives you the opportunity to experience unique places that are away from the typical tourist crowds. You will explore the area of the impressive Belogradchik rocks, which in 2009 competed in the New 7 Wonders of Nature campaign at your own pace! The rocks are located within a 3 h 15 min drive (per direction) from Sofia. We recommend departure from Sofia no later than 8 AM.

Your first stop will be the town of Belogradchik. There, you will visit the fortress at the Belogradchik rock complex and have free time for lunch.

In the early afternoon, your driver can transfer you to the Borov Kamak rock complex. Most travellers skip that not very well-known area, which offers a wonderful opportunity for a scenic walk amidst the rocks which usually takes about an hour.

ON THE WAY BACK:

Depending on your pace and preferences, you can customise your experience by choosing one of the following options, that we would recommend:

A visit to the town of Chiprovtsi, known around the Balkans for its traditions in producing the traditional Chiprovtsi carpets and for the XVII century Chiprovtsi uprising that aimed to liberate Bulgaria from the Ottomans. There, you can visit the Historical museum, and taste local craft beer!

A visit Magurata. This is one of the most impressive Bulgarian caves. It is famous for its exceptional post-Paleolithic cave paintings – one of the most significant pieces of prehistoric art in Europe (The paintings are currently closed to the public!). The cave is inhabited by a great diversity of bats. It is located near the banks of the biggest inland lake in Bulgaria.

2 – DAY TOUR OPTION

If you want to explore more from the Northwest, or just enjoy the area at a slow pace, we give you the opportunity to enhance the trip by adding one more day to it. You can book 1 overnight in a local hotel or guest house. That option allows you to choose a later departure hour from Sofia. Here are some other interesting things to do around Belogradchik, that you can include in your trip:

A hot air balloon flight. This option gives you the unique opportunity to marvel the Belogradchik rocks from above. Hot air balloon flights are only available early in the morning, and if there is no wind.

A Visit to Venetsa cave. This cave is smaller than Magurata, but is home to the biggest stalacton in Bulgaria! It is also rich in stalactites, stalagmites and even helictites.

Electric bike tours or jeep safari in the area. The rocks cover a vast area, so most visitors only see part of the rock phenomena. Both options give you the opportunity to explore the area in detail.

Wine and food degustations. Bulgaria’s Northwest is known for its tasty, local cuisine and for the variety of high-quality wines, including the well-known all-around Bulgaria Gamza wines.

If you choose the 2-day option, please, let us know in advance which options you are interested in!
